Dove’s latest campaign – #ChooseBeautiful – is my favourite one yet. Essentially, ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Average’ are posted over two doorways and women walk through a doorway that describes how they perceive themselves.
How do you feel watching that?
I felt sad as women walked through the average door. They looked defeated. And I felt defeated. Because I think I would have chosen the average door. For a long time that’s how I’ve seen myself. I don’t think I’m ugly, but I rarely describe myself as beautiful. This isn’t meant to be a pity party for myself, I’ve just seen it as truth for me. But it’s a lie.
I am beautiful. I choose beautiful.
That’s how simple it is.
When I watch some of those women go through the doorway marked beautiful, I smile. I laugh at how some of them dance their way through. They’re happy. And I am too, because I now choose that too. There’s power in choosing beautiful.
*I could go on about positive thinking and building your self-esteem, but for now, this is all there is to it. Simply choosing beautiful.
